How to Keep Up on Your Makeup Techniques with Practice

Updated: Dec 6, 2022

Being stuck at home all the time can be difficult. Dealing with the quarantine is even worse if you’re enrolled in a skin care training school in St. Petersburg, FL. You’re trying to improve your skills and build a career, but that can be challenging if all the classes you’re taking are online. All is not lost, however. There are things you can do to practice your craft even during a worldwide pandemic. Here are some ways to work on your makeup skills from home.

Practice on Yourself

If you’re an aspiring makeup artist, you probably already love to do your own makeup, so getting you to do so shouldn’t be too difficult. The difference when you’re pursuing your makeup artist certification is you need to do more than just apply makeup so that you look good. You need to work on your skills with purpose. This means trying different techniques on yourself so that you’re always getting better. Even if a color or style isn’t something you’d ordinarily do for yourself, it’s important that you try it anyway. Think of yourself as your own model that you can experiment on.

Practice on Roommates

If you’re living with roommates or family members, they’re probably stuck at home just like you are. Part of the cost they have to pay for living with a makeup artist is their willingness to be a model, so remind them of that. In the same way, you can practice on yourself, do so with your roommates. Try different makeup brands and looks to see what works and what doesn’t. The good news is whenever an effort fails, they have nowhere to go anyway, so there’s no harm done.

Work on Your Photography

How you showcase your work is going to be important once you have your certification. Your portfolio and your social media presence (should you choose to go that route) will rely on your ability to present your talents in the best way possible. Take the time to learn some professional photography tips and then try them out. After working on your craft on yourself or a friend, take as professional a photo as you can, and then study the results to take into account the things you’ve done right or wrong. Take several pictures in different positions to see which ones show off your work the best. Change up the lighting and try a variety of angles. How you show off your work will help determine your brand and contribute to a successful career as a makeup artist.

Take Your Time

If you have a lot of time to kill anyway, then make the most of it. Your ability to master the details will have a lot to do with your ability to thrive as a professional makeup artist. The work you do will be studied closely by others either on the job or in your photographs, so take whatever time is necessary to perfect every element of your work.
